It was a strange week in America for sure and so it feels a bit odd to be promoting a tour and a record. If nothing else, I hope that this week’s events remind all to hold our loved ones a little closer and to take every opportunity that life gives us to show kindness to others.

Alas, this is show business…and in times like these, making music seems more important than ever…a conduit of human connection and a catalyst for healing and hope.

As many of you already know, the new album, ‘Letters from the Lost’ is slated for release on Tuesday May 14th. Making this album was a revelatory experience and big step in a new creative direction for me, so I am dizzy with excitement about sharing it with you. I hope that you will help spread the word about the release as I am putting this one out all by myself and leaning on you… the best ‘record label’, fans and support system a guy could ever hope to have.

The album is now available for pre-order, digitally on iTunes and in various compact disc and vinyl packages at my online store.

EAST COAST HEADLINE SHOWS – NOW ON SALE – VIENNA (DC), PHILLY, NYC, MAINE, BOSTON:

We are bringing a show to the east coast like no other Nash show you have ever seen. Josh Day will be playing drums and singing and special guest (and opening act) Eliza Moore (whose debut EP I produced this winter) will be sitting in on fiddle. There will be electric guitar, harmony, drums and in other words, the ‘rock’ that I have been sorely missing in my solo shows.

Boston – we especially look forward to seeing you and sharing a big musical hug with you. Your bravery and resilience has been a true inspiration this week.

WEST COAST, ROCKIES AND MIDWEST: CO-HEADLINE TOUR DATES WITH DAVID RAMIREZ:

I am thrilled to announce a co-headline tour with Austin, TX based songwriter, David Ramirez. His songs will knock you on your ass. We kick things off on May 23rd in Phoenix and take the show up the west coast, back down through the Rockies, over to Chicago and then South from there. Tickets for almost all of the shows are now available. These shows will be the duo format with Josh Day on drums and vocals.

Citizens!

I am happy to announce that my (lucky) seventh full length studio album, ‘Letters from the Lost’ will be set free unto the world on Tuesday, May 14th 2013. What began as a creative exercise in being open to possibility and exploring new sonic directions in my home studio, grew into what I believe is the most poignant and honest musical endeavor I have ever been a part of. I hope that you will listen and find the same thing to be true.

This album was made possible by the generous cooperation of listeners like you. For this, I am incredibly grateful. ‘Letters from the Lost’ will be an entirely independent release and so, more than ever, I am reliant upon you to help spread the good word. Two songs from the album; ‘Sailor’ (through Paste Magazine’s premier) and ‘Wander’ (via my homespun, iPhone generated Youtube video) are now available for your perusal. If you like what you hear, tell you neighbors and loved ones.

‘Sailor’ at Paste.com

‘Wander’ on youtube

The album is now available for pre-order on both vinyl and compact disc, exclusively at www.jaynash.com

In preparation for the album release, www.jaynash.com has been completely overhauled and now features videos, photos, streamlined performance information and much more. Have a look!

With a new album, comes a new tour. At the end of April, I will be hopping in the van with the mighty, Ivan & Alyosha as we take to the plains and mountains of Western Canada and Washington state. I had the privilege of catching one of their sets at SXSW, where they had about 300 people huddled together in a sweltering outdoor tent. Despite the close quarters and intense heat, nobody was complaining. In fact, nearly every face in that crowd was grinning ear to ear. Suffice to say, I am very much looking forward to these 8 shows:

May 07 – Bellingham, WA – The Wild Buffalo

May 09 – Vancouver, Canada – The Media Club

HEADLINE RECORD RELEASE SHOWS:

Next up on the itinerary is five headline shows to commemorate the release of ‘Letters from the Lost’. I am very excited to announce that one of my favorite drummers and all around musicians on the planet, Josh Day will be joining me for the run. We’re going to load up the tour wagon with as many drums, guitars, mandolins, amplifiers and pyrotechnics as is humanly possible. We aim to bring a show that will hopefully rock your socks. (and maybe break your heart)

Tickets for all 5 shows are on sale and the preferential seating is available in most cases, first come first serve. Go!

Advance praise for ‘Letters from the Lost’:

“Letters from the Lost absolutely sounds like a keeper. Check out Jay Nash live. You might be blown away.” - No Depression

“Jay Nash has a voice that vibrates with the power of commitment. That is the guarantee that he gives away with each song. Jay is a seeker, and the lessons he learns, the questions he asks of himself and others, can be found in his music. The tracks on Letters from the Lost present themselves with music that cradles Jay’s words. The soft acoustics are content to support the voice, to let the words stand as testament to the power of the singer/songwriter to elicit change through his sweetly sung dialogue.” - Alternate Root TV

“Often noted for his unique blend of Americana, alternative, folk and rock influences, “Sailor” captures Nash’s sound in a manner that offers a comprehensive glimpse into the niche Nash has managed to craft for himself over the years. Acoustic guitars, a driving beat and Nash’s honest vocal delivery make up this solid track.“ - Paste

“Sailor captures (Nash’s new found creative) freedom brilliantly; it’s a song filled with hope and optimism. Beginning as a loose alt-country number it grows in stature to a chest-beating and defiant chorus. Layers of guitar do battle for attention and end up in perfect harmony.” - The Sound of Confusion

“Wander, a brooding tale about eternal searching which evokes a Bruce Springsteen-like vibe thanks to Nash’s raw vocals and steady groove. It’s the type of song you could lose your consciousness in — especially if you’re listening to it while driving alone on a dark highway. Guilty.” - The Round Table

“Letters from the Lost…reflects a change in the air and a time for stepping out. Behind Nash’s distinct vocals are a far more layered soul. And in support: mandolin, baritone electric guitar and ethereal noise.” - RSL Blog

I have some new stuff up for grabs in my newly redesigned online store: signed, special edition hard copies of ‘of the woods’ and the new ‘N*A*S*H’ American Apparel track shirts. Both are available now in very limited quantities. Check out the online store, here

THANKS

I realize that I have already used the word ‘thank’ four times in this email. I mean it though. I try to write songs and make records that I believe are true. I put my all into creating them and then singing them every night on the road. It doesn’t always leave time for much else. You guys have done the rest, so I feel incredibly fortunate to have you. So I will say it again. Thank you….for listening, for showing up, for spreading the word and for being supportive. You’re pretty awesome.

If you’re in Texas, I look forward to seeing you this week. If not, then someday soon.

Yesterday, I surfed at Topanga Canyon in North Los Angeles for the third day in a row. When I lived in Los Angeles, this place was a sanctuary for me. Not only is it a near perfect point break in a stunning physical setting, I’ve always found something really special about the equality of surfers in the lineup out in the water. You might find a dude who lives out of his RV hanging out and chatting it up with a billionaire or a movie star. In the social landscape of southern california, this is a setting with almost no equal.

On Friday, I got in the water at about 5pm. Much to my chagrin, i realized upon arrival at the beach, that I had forgotten my wetsuit. I was determined to surf, no matter how chilly. So, I stormed off into the water opting to take my 9 foot longboard. I figured that I could keep more of my body out of the water with the bigger board.

The conditions were near perfect – waist to chest-high waves, peeling perfectly off the point. The water wasn’t nearly as cold as I expected either. My feet didn’t even get numb. I had about 75 minutes to spend in the water and in that time, I caught probably fifteen perfect waves. It was heavenly.

The next day, I returned to Topanga, mid-morning with my wife. The atmosphere in the water was similar. It was a saturday, so there were a fair amount of people out there. There were a lot of ‘party waves’, where three or four people share the face of a bigger set wave. Everybody was having a good time. I spent about half the day on my 7’10” fun board and half of the day on my 9’ long board. Towards the end of the day, I found myself in the right place, at the right time and caught a big rogue wave which turned out to be one of the best waves that i have ridden in five years.

On Sunday, we were a little pressed for time, but we found ourselves in the neighborhood. I got in the water with about 30 minutes to spare. Once I had finished paddling out to the main take-off point for the break, I heard a guy, probably in his early fifties…a salty character who had probably been surfing Topanga for 30 years say, ‘oh…this guy doesn’t get it’. I wasn’t sure if he was talking about me and I really didn’t care one way or another. In the water, I am assertive about yielding right of way as well as staking claim to waves that are rightfully mine.

As is normal, there was a bit of waiting time out there before the first set rolled in. I greeted some of the familiar faces in the lineup and gave a nod to ‘Salty’ (the guy who made the ‘doesn’t get it’ comment’). He had asked me a few minutes earlier on the shore for some wax at which time, I pointed him in the direction of another surfer who was carrying some.

Then a set started rolling in. I let the first two waves go to some guys who had been out there waiting longer than I had. When the third wave came in, the peak was headed directly for me. ‘Salty’ was on the inside, and from my estimation, appeared to be too far in to take off and make the section without the wave closing on him. Still, he paddled for the wave in my direction. As I stood up, I heard him grunting and taking off at the same time. I immediately made a frontside turn to the lip of the wave and motioned to ‘Salty’ (who, this point had the right of way on the wave) to pass on by and enjoy the wave.

As ‘Salty’ approached on the face of the wave, he yelled ‘GET THE FUCK OFF!!’

So much for the camaraderie and equality that I mentioned earlier.

I paddled back out to the take off point and waited.

‘Salty’ paddled back out the lineup and stopped…about 10 feet away from me. I don’t think that i had the friendliest look on my face. I can’t remember the last time that somebody spoke to me that way. I was pissed.

He glared back and after a few seconds, began spitting words: ‘don’t fucking paddle on me! This is not a long board spot! Summer’s over! I’m fucking sick of you fuckers.’

I replied, ‘Dude – it’s a Sunday and we are in Los Angeles. I yielded the wave to you and this is not a long board’.

He kept yelling. I stopped listening. A couple of his friends paddled up and mustered something of an apology to me…’don’t worry about it. You were right. He gets grumpy.’.

I was able to catch a couple of great waves before getting out of the water, but the whole exchange with ‘Salty’ really unsettled me.

The younger, more hot-headed version of me would have punched ‘Salty’ in the face. Of course, a part of me still wanted to retaliate. I was so stunned by the unprecedented level of douche-baggery that this guy presented to me, that I said very little in reply. It just was not worth it.

I wish that I had said the following however..or at least, that I could transmit this message to his brain. I think it applies to anyone who makes the choice to avoid showing basic respect to other human beings:

Someday, and hopefully someday relatively soon, you are going have the sobering realization that nobody likes you, ‘Salty’. Nobody cares about you, because – you are a raging asshole. You might have gotten the wave, but unless you change your ways, you are going to die painfully alone.

I’m guessing that a series of bad decisions led ‘Salty’ to become a dispirited and unhappy person, but being unkind or disrespectful to another person. Furthermore, you might just disrespect the wrong person and find yourself choking on your own teeth.

Seek harmony. Everyone on this planet has their own struggle. Open the door for the person walking up to the restaurant behind you. Use your turn signal. Yield. Merge. Just don’t be a dick.

The moral of the story is this – be kind.

see you out there.

That’s all for now. See you out there.

I remember when I was kid, being dumbfounded, paralyzed and terrified all at once, when the notion of infinity first dawned on me. I think that I was eleven years old and in the sixth grade at Enders Road Elementary School. It was then, that the expanse of the Universe and the endless stream of time first dwarfed my perception of my own reality and it was then, for the very first time that I felt afraid and alone.

This pre-pubescent, existential crisis was thankfully subverted by a fortunate discovery.

Music.

Sure, I had been listening to bands like Def Leppard, Quiet Riot and Kiss on an expandable suitcase-record player since I was seven, which was all well and good. But, it was the sound of the Grateful Dead, emanating from my Sanyo boombox, as I laid in my bunk bed, that reconnected me to the world, humanity and I dare say, the universe. There was a language of truth that I had never heard before in Jerry Garcia’s fiery playing (circa the 1971, ‘Skull and Roses’ release), that intertwined in conversation, chorus and harmony with Bob Weir’s, glassy, rhythmic punctuations. The entire band was communicating with each other and it’s audience in way that I could barely comprehend. Suddenly, I was no longer alone.

Shortly thereafter, I flipped that 90 minute Maxell tape over and discovered a resonance of similar amplitude in the songs and voice of Cat Stevens. Of course, his music was of a completely different shade, but the connection was just as strong. It was clear to me, at that moment, in my eleven year old mind, that Cat had pondered the same questions and fears that I had in my early existentialism. Again I realized, I was not alone.

What followed between then and now, was probably not all that different than the experience that many American songwriters have had growing up. My uncle gave me a guitar, I became obsessed with the recordings of the Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, Cat Stevens and the like, and I began to figure out how to play some songs. Slowly (though not particularly surely) I would also begin to find my voice as a singer, a player and a writer. Eventually, I found my way to New York City, then on to Los Angeles and onto stages all across the land.

All of that stuff hardly seems as important though, as that discovery that I made when I was just a kid. It wasn’t necessarily The Dead, Jerry or Cat Stevens, specifically…it really could have been anyone, I think. Sam Cooke, Michael Jackson, Charlie Parker…Frank Sinatra. What I discovered, was the connective power of music. Every once in a while, throughout my life, I will forget and when I do, I suppose that I let my perception of the world around me fade in to black and white. Then, I will hear a voice, or a song…or find myself onstage with a particularly open and enthusiastic audience, or sharing a harmony with a friend…and BOOM! Everything explodes back into technicolor.

So – that is what I do. I seek that connection. I search for that sound. I suspect that the universe has some particular resonant frequencies and I believe that is truth that we are all looking for. Just as it exists in the physical world, I think that we can find that resonance in melody, harmony, rhythm and poetry. I was lucky enough to discover it very early on in my life – and so, I take that as a hint from the universe that I should encourage and enable others to make similar discoveries.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and here’s hoping you can find it too.

Why…hello there,

July isn’t over and it has already been a long, hot summer. I hope that this finds you close to a body of water or at the very least, unafraid to sit in a kiddie pool in your front lawn.

I want to thank all of you that have made it out to a show recently or that have recently joined the mailing list. In the coming months, I’ll be announcing some exclusive music giveaways.

CALIFORNIA…IN AUGUST:

I’m very excited to announce two very special California shows with my soul sister, Garrison Starr. Both shows will likely sell out, so grab your tickets now:

Wednesday – 8.22 – 8:30 pm – Room 5 – Los Angeles, CA - TICKETS

Saturday – 8.25 – 7pm – Zoey’s Cafe – Ventura, CA - TICKETS

THE NEW ALBUM – PROGRESS!

The new album is nearing completion and I couldn’t be happier about it. It’s different than any record that I have ever made before and at the same time, it’s the natural evolution of of everything I’ve ever done.

About a month ago, I announced my second ‘digital yardsale’, an offering of exclusive packaged premiums to help fund the production and release of this album. Up for grabs, are early exclusive access to music from the new album, VIP concert tickets, house concerts, ipods packed with my entire catalogue and even the chance to co-write a song together. (and a whole lot more)

The response so far has been nothing short of incredible and I can say with certainty that this album will be seeing the light of day sometime in early 2013. So, I cannot thank you enough. I’ve said it before, I will say it again…you guys are the best. Thank you.

Hi there.

Much is happening in this camp, as seems to be the norm lately.

BIG EAST COAST SHOWS, THIS WEEK:

Beginning with a sendoff show at the Blue Horse Inn in Woodstock, VT this coming Thursday, my soul sister and musical compatriot, Garrison Starr are heading onward to Boston, NY and Philadelphia for shows Friday, Saturday and Sunday respectively. I promise you a night to remember. Help us spread the word and grab your tickets in advance at www.jaynash.com or the links below:

THURSDAY 6.28.12 – The Blue Horse Inn – Woodstock, VT (co-headline w/ Garrison Starr) - TICKETS

FRIDAY 6.29.12 – The Red Room at Cafe 939 – Boston, MA (JN headline show) - TICKETS

SATURDAY 6.30.12 – Joe’s Pub – New York, NY (GS supports) - TICKETS or call: 212-967-7555

SUNDAY 7.1.12 – World Cafe Live – Philadelphia (co-headline with GS) - TICKETS

A NEW, FULL LENGTH RECORD, WELL UNDERWAY:

Perhaps you’ve heard rumblings of this if you have been following the story closely at home. I’m excited about this one. Sure, I do excited about the process of making records in general, but I do believe that this one is special. I hunkered down for nearly three months last winter, ignored the world after a year of touring and found some new ground.

As I did with ‘Diamonds and Blood’, I am throwing a ‘digital yard sale’ to help fund the production and release of the album.

It’s a win-win situation…you get to hear the songs, demos, early mixes and yes…the finished album before anyone else does. You take home super exclusive premiums and maybe even write a song with me or have me over to play a show in your living room…and I get to put this album out without selling my soul to the devil.

Eight different packages are now available in very limited supply. Get the full scoop and more at: www.jaynash.com/newalbum2012

ROCK FOR THE RIVER 9:

Tickets are moving very, very quickly. Faster than ever before in the eight previous years that we have come together for this, my favorite evening of the summer.

On Saturday, July 7th, I will be joined by Joe Purdy, Amber Rubarth, Garrison Starr, Eliza Moore and some very, very special guests along with an all star band quarterbacked by Matt DelVecchio on bass and Josh Day on drums.

Tickets are now on sale at Save the River. Call 315.686.2010 anytime between 9am and 5pm EST to get yours before they are gone.

OF THE WOODS EP:

Just in case you missed my latest installment of new songs released on May 8th, ‘of the woods’ is now available on iTunes, Emusic and Spotify. You can also listen for free at www.jaynash.com. The iTunes digital EP includes two versions of each of the four songs and a 10 page digital booklet. Click here or the banner above to purchase

Thanks for listening and spreading the word. You are simply the greatest. Stay tuned for tour dates in the fall throughout the US and Europe…

see you out there.
